Leaf Folk - Back in Early 2004
Back in early 2004, when the nights were well drawn in, a disparate bunch of folk gathered in the Harbour Bar in Newhaven, united in a love of live music. As the afternoon wore on, a notion emerged to start a club to bring good live contemporary and traditional folk, blues, country and world music to the local area. Musicians, teachers, actors, civil servants and Patch the dog raised a glass to this daring ploy, and so Leith Folk Club was born!
By June 2004 and after a few late nights, we had a location, a logo, a constitution, and a few bookings. Doors opened to a sell out crowd in the beautiful little gallery/dining space which is part of The Village in South Fort Street, and they have been opening almost every Tuesday ever since!
The Club is run on a 'not for profit' basis and a very large percentage of the income from ticket sales goes directly to the artists. Our weekly raffle is the main source of income for the club. The income it generates is used to pay for the maintenance of our PA system and for publicity material.
We’ve had our ups, downs and a wee stagger or two along the way, but we’re really happy to be able to continually bring in an audience, and to entertain them with what we believe is the very best of the current folk music scene.
Thanks go to our hosts and the staff at The Village, thanks to our incredibly varied and diverse audience, and many, many thanks to the singers and musicians who continue to astonish and delight, to move and groove, and all without the help of wooly jumpers!
Leith Folk Club is run by volunteers on a not-for-profit basis. Our income comes only from ticket sales and the proceeds of our weekly raffle. Any financial surpluses remaining after the artists have been paid are retained within the Club and used to maintain our PA equipment and for publicity.
